Unless you’ve actually experienced “the ecstasy of the immeasurable”, you can only imagine what the phrase might refer to, if anything real at all. What’s so great about immeasurability? The stars in the night sky are innumerable and space is immeasurable, but there’s no ecstasy in acknowledging this, so whatever K was rhapsodizing about, the reader/listener can only conjure up in his own mind out of his own desperate need for transcendence. You believe K transcended the confined, crabbed, cramped sense of existence that you, the conditioned, are cursed with, so you use his words to experience vicariously what you desperately want. You need to transcend yourself, your conditioning; you need to escape, once and for all. But since K condemned all forms of escape, your only escape is through his words. doesn't the "cramped" sense simply expand along with our consciousness of conditioning? Isn't it relative to our perception of its size? If this cage always encompasses all that we can experience at which point do we stop calling it a cage, or more to the point why do we begin to call it a cage at all? |

I do not believe any of that, Nick, so I cannot join in your 'we.' You seem to have included yourself in a belief community.

It depends on what you mean by "expand". The educated person has extensive knowledge acquired from books and authorities that give him the illusion of understanding things he has no experience of, so he arrogantly assumes his cage is more capacious than the cage of the uneducated, and a superior cage, at that, because the more second-hand knowledge he crams into his head, the bigger his cage gets. He loves his cage more than life itself. But since actual learning has little to do with formal education and everything to do with experience, the cage never really expands nor contracts, but its "nature and structure" become increasingly more obvious. You're right. I shouldn't include myself amongst the believers so I changed it for you. |
