"...there is a conflict between the movement of eternal life and the desire for self-protection. From this conflict arise sorrow and the many carefully cultivated escape"

Consider the implications of this statement. The teacher assumes the right to speak of "the movement of eternal life" without having to elaborate on, explain, or provide verification of such "movement" because he's expected to say things the student can only ponder for lack of experience. The student assumes the teacher has something of great significance to communicate, that he's "coming from" a more enlightened place, but his assumption doesn't interest him as much as how to "get" what the teacher is saying.

The teacher/student relationship is an accepted part of human relationship because there's knowledge to be conveyed from those who know to those who want to know. But when the teacher's function is not to instruct or inform but to awaken the student to his own "movement", the thing to "get" is that the teacher is not teaching but holding up a mirror the student invariably mistakes for a body of knowledge.

lidlo lady quote of the day :
The teacher/student relationship is an accepted part of human relationship because there's knowledge to be conveyed from those who know to those who want to know. But what about when the knowledge must come from the student, and the teacher's function is to inspire the student to realize this? A poor student, a lousy listener, accumulates the teacher's words and identifies with them and the teacher's intent is lost on him because he's less interested in why the teacher goes to the trouble than in getting what he, the student, wants.

We are watching, not waiting, not expecting anything to happen but watching without end. JK

From the sky, from the wares, from the earth let there come to us that bounty that we long for and that you give, that brings happiness to those whose praises reach far,O Savitr.
