Hi Ute! I have a question I hope you can help me with. Are there a lot of national parks in Germany? There seems to be an extraordinary amount of dark green area on this map. How is it possible to have such a large area of the country in preservation? Just curious.

finally I found out where your comment is posted, I´m not yet used to the settings here.
There are 15 National Parks in Germany on 2,6 % of the whole area of the country.
The other green areas are cultivated woods which make about 30% of the state area.
Many of them are monocultures of spruces and rather poor in animals and diversity of plants. After the storm damages of the last years this changed a bit, and now there´s more mixed woodland cultivated. And the nationalparks have their problems,too, because there are so many visitors to disturb the animals, that are more shy. Germany is a rather densely populated country compared to the United States.
